Over 150 years ago, during Japan’s post-Meiji era and modernization, a collaboration between foreign intellectuals and the Hokkaido Development Commission, known as “Kaitakushi,” led to the establishment of more than 30 enterprises between 1869 and 1882.
Among these pioneers was Nakagawa Seibei, a Japanese brewmaster who honed his craft in Germany. Harnessing Hokkaido’s unique climate and natural environment, he chose Sapporo as the birthplace of Japan’s beer industry. In 1876, he founded Japan’s first brewery, a historic site located directly across from the hotel. This legacy profoundly inspired the hotel’s design, with elements of Sapporo’s brewing heritage subtly woven into its architecture and interiors. A standout feature is the striking 3D wild hop sculpture at the entrance, created by local artist Kawakami Rie.
As Kaitakushi’s activities transitioned to Sapporo, the city began its transformation into a modern metropolis. During this period, beer was not only a luxury but also a cultural bridge, connecting foreign visitors with the pioneers driving Hokkaido’s industrial progress.
The Kaitakushi-era cityscape was characterized by a unique architectural blend of Western-style reception rooms and Japanese-style living spaces. Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection honors this heritage, reinterpreting it for the 21st century. The result is a seamless fusion of past and present, East and West, where timeless sophistication meets modern comfort.
Welcome to Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection, a tribute to Sapporo’s rich history and to the pioneering spirits whose vision and efforts shaped Hokkaido’s legacy.
